Frequently Asked Questions
UNWI 1 & 2 - Part of the Elkhorn and Natomas Boulevard Sewer Connection Project
What is an interceptor?
An interceptor is a large underground sewer pipeline. Interceptors vary in diameter between 36 and 144 inches and collect wastewater from local sewer lines. SRCSD has approximately 147 miles of interceptors that send wastewater from the urban Sacramento area to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in Elk Grove.
Why is the project needed?

Tunnel Boring Machine at Heading
Currently, the wastewater conveyance system serving northeast Sacramento County is nearing capacity. To ensure reliable sewer service and to meet future demands for increased capacity, construction of the new sewer system is necessary.
What is the planned route?
The 3.65-mile long UNWI 1 & 2 route begins at Bridgecross Drive and runs south along the East Drainage Canal next to Natomas Boulevard and Truxel Road. It ends at the New Natomas Pump Station, near the intersection of Interstates 5 and 80.
What is included in this project?
UNWI 1 & 2 includes nearly four miles of 144-inch pipe. All of the pipe will be installed using underground tunneling methods to reduce impacts to the surrounding areas. The project also includes:
- 144-inch by 120-inch transition structure to connect UNWI sections 1 & 2 to the New Natomas Pump Station
- 84-inch by 144-inch transition structure to connect UNWI sections 1 & 2 and 3 & 4
- 54 feet of 120-inch interceptor pipeline
- 20 manholes spaced 1,000 feet apart
- 3 connections to existing collection sewer lines
What can I expect during construction?
Construction hours are as follows:
Monday through Friday -- 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.*
Saturday -- 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.*
*Underground tunneling will occur 24 hours-a-day, seven days-per-week.
While the construction team works hard to reduce impacts, some increased dust and noise is expected. Additionally, some traffic lane shifts or closures may be necessary where the project crosses roads.
When necessary, the project team will leave door hangers at residents and businesses at least 72 hours prior to any construction activities that may lead to direct impacts. The 24-hour project hotline is also available at 866-479-0600.

What is the anticipated timeline for construction?

| Spring 2008 - Summer 2010 | Manhole Construction |
| Winter 2008 - Spring 2010 | Underground tunneling |
| Winter 2010 | Anticipated completion |
What safety measures are in place?
During construction, safety is our number one concern. Please be aware of safety cones, flaggers and construction signs.
- Motorists - Thank you for your patience during construction. Please observe and obey all traffic controls including reduced sped limits - remember, traffic fines double in construction zones. Keep your eye out for construction workers and bicyclists!
- Bicyclists - Please walk your bike around the construction zone where designated and ride with the flow of traffic. Watch out for construction vehicles utilizing the levee road.
- Pedestrians - Please observe sidewalk closures and walk only in designated areas through the construction zones. Please cross only at legal crosswalks and do not enter any construction zones.
- Children - Please remind children to stay away from construction zones at all times. Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk to their children about the dangers of construction zones.

As with all SRCSD projects, comprehensive safety measures are utilized to secure the construction zone. Additionally, all excavations sites will be covered with steel plates, back-filled or fenced off from public access when not in use. Concrete barriers will also block the construction areas from street and pedestrian traffic.
How is the project funded?
This project is entirely funded through sewer connection fees. Customers' monthly sewer bills will not be increased to fund this project.
How can I get more information about the projects?
